Where have we been?

Why, right here, of course. However, the content has been lacking lately, and there are a few things we should be doing to rectify that. So here is an update to the mission of DCDNB, although it is subject to change.

Get involved with the DCDNB blog, a continuing project centered around the drum’n’bass music genre and the DC Metro area (basically within a 25-mile radius of Washington, DC). Look for the following regular posts:

  • Mondays: From here on out, Mondays are Mixtape Mondays. Makes sense, right? If you are a DC area DJ, send us your mixes. We are no longer aggregating information from the local forums and webcasts, we want the DJs to forward on their material. So if you want to see your mix from EXBC or Dirtbox, or any other webcasts we might be aware of, send us a link, a title or show name & date, a track listing and contact info (email, a website address, a Twitter account), and make sure your mix is mostly drum’n’bass and mixed well. If you’re clanging the mixes, some of the regulars who check our blog & Twitter will ask me “what’s up with new jack DJ train wrecking up & down their mix?”

  • Tuesdays - Thursdays: We are going to try some new content ideas out, maybe something interactive with those who read the blog. We might be asking for photo replies of record collections, DJ set ups, studios, hand drawn DCDNB logos, air horn impressions, 10-minute mixes with nothing but double drops, etc.

  • Fridays: This will be a combination of:
    • Five For Friday - a short form interview with the dynamic range of people that make up the local drum’n’bass scene.

    • Flashback Friday - either we, or someone we contact, will post an item or two that reflects the history of the DC drum’n’bass scene. This could be old fliers, old mixtapes or just a YouTube clip of any old tunes we feel like.

    • Feature Friday - Some other feature we might come up with.

If you want to get involved, for now the best method of contact is to email Harry Ransom at r4ns0m (at) gmail (dot) com and let him know you want to help in some way, or post a comment on one of our posts.

Also promoters, if you want DCDNB promoting your event in some capacity and you will help us out by including our logo in your promotional materials, let us know; we also have a vector version of our classic logo, which designers can incorporate in to their designs easily. As with the mixes, we are no longer scouring forums for info, we want to establish a connection with those active in producing & promoting events in Washington, DC. If you have drum’n’bass on your line-up and that party is happening in DC (or very close to the city, not down in Richmond, VA or up in Baltimore, MD), let us know.

Look for other updates as well. We will be trying out a lot of different ideas for content. And with all of that said, I am going to post about an event tomorrow in DC, and maybe a couple old drum’n’bass tunes that I was listening to earlier today.

11 June 10

Mixtape Thursday #26 - yeah yeah, I know, it is Friday.

Work was busy yesterday and I did not have time after to do the post. You’d think I’d be on top of it, especially when one of my own mixes is part of the week’s batch. Anyways, on to the important stuff:

  • Dirtbox Radio Archives: DBR #420 [30-MAY-2010]
    • Sabin [ DOWNLOAD ]
    • ODJ [ DOWNLOAD ]
    • IllEffect [ DOWNLOAD ]

  • Alcrani - ‘2010 Promo Mix’ [ LINK
***Technically Alcrani is in Richmond, VA, but close enough to DC and it is a solid mix, lots of exclusives

Go party this week: 08-JUN-2010 to 14-JUN-2010

Here’s where you’ll find some drum’n’bass in the DC area over the next seven days:

  • 09-JUN-2010 [WED in VA]: Transit | promo thread
    w/ DnB DJs: Synrgy / Fringe (Phaydn & Crio) / Definitive Junglists / D.T.L. Contraversy / Pickillz
Event had to be canceled due to issues at the venue.

There does not seem to be any drum’n’bass booked in the area this week :|

    3 June 10

Two days after Tuesday event outlook.

Work has been busy. My time out of work has been busy. But here is what is coming up (even if it is to shamelessly plug my own gig):

w/ DnB DJs: TobyDown / MarshaLaw / iLLapse / Christian Dope
plus a whole other room of DJs

plus four more stages of DJs and bands and craziness

If you are coming out to Starscape early, I (Harry Ransom) will be the opening DJ on the dnb stage, going on at 2PM.

    Mixtape Thursday #25

    The latest from DC’s ranks:

    Mixtape Thursday #24

Slackin’, slackin’, slackin’… here is the latest on the mixtape campaign by DC’s finest:

    • DJ Stepan: EXBC Podcast #236 [ DOWNLOAD | LINK ]

    Mixtape Thursday #23

Lots of familiar names for this week’s update, and if you check the mixes you are going to hear a wide range of styles, some classics and some unreleased treats! And any drum’n’bass is going to be better than the stuff my co-worker is listening to right now. It sounds like cheap 80s porn soundtrack music.

    • Ces: Dreams (Spring 2010 dnb mix) (May 09, 2010) [ LINK ]

    • Darkenetiks: EXBC Podcast #222 [ DOWNLOAD | LINK ]

    • HYX & H0U5T0N: The Growing Phenomenon Of Internet (May 13, 2010) [ LINK ]
    11 May 10

Tuesday drum’n’bass event outlook for 05/11 to 05/17

    A little late…

    • 14-MAY-2010 [FRI in DC]: Konkrete Jungle DC | promo thread
      w/ DnB DJs: HYX & H0U5T0N / Serial / Headhunterz Inc. / James Z aka Therapist
Note: This is the final Konkrete Jungle DC event, but the guys plan to continue throwing a monthly drum’n’bass event at Jimmy Valentine’s, just branding it under a different name.

Flashback Friday Feature #05: Act Your Age hosted DJ Addiction

A trio of Flashback Friday posts, this time looking at the weekly event Act Your Age (AYA), which ran for over a year and between two venues. Originally starting in 2000, in the basement of an Ethiopian restaurant in Adams Morgan, AYA eventually moved to a relatively new mega-club in DC called Insomnia, usually using the VIP-room for the weekly, but occasionally using a larger warehouse space on the top floor.

The line-ups were a nice blend of local, regional, national and international talent, often bringing through new talent from each of those categories, and also shaking up the sub-genres. The promotional material was originally a showcase of designs by several local designers, but over time Eve Communications became the full-time designer, and pushed very interesting designs.

One very memorable night was when DJ Addiction (Defunked - UK) headlined.

Here is part one of his set that night, recorded live on September 5, 2001.

    Download: http://dnbshare.com/download/LiveatActYourAge_05-SEP-2001_-part1.mp3.html

So what has become of AYA’s old stomping grounds? Showboat, the original venue, is now a sushi restaurant called Saki. Insomnia was torn down for a parking garage, directly across the street from where Muse Lounge now sits. And DJ Addiction? He seemed to have disappeared, perhaps living out his BMX half-pipe obsession somewhere in the midlands of the U.K.

Look for part two of this mix in the near future!
